The original Mac mini debuted 20 years ago, and in that time, it has evolved from a compact curiosity into one of the most powerful and cost-effective desktop computers on the market today. Steve Jobs first introduced the Mac mini at the 2005 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), and it quickly became a marvel due to its tiny form factor. However, despite its impressive design, Jobs’ description of the computer was rather modest. “This is a very robust computer, but it’s very, very tiny,” he said, hinting that even Apple wasn’t sure how the device would be received.

Fast-forward to 2025, and the Mac mini has come a long way. With the introduction of Apple’s M4 chips, the Mac mini now packs an incredible amount of power into an even smaller design, making it one of the best desktop computers you can buy today. But beyond its impressive specs, the Mac mini has also defied a common misconception about Apple products: that they are all overpriced. The current Mac mini is not only the most affordable Mac on the market, but it also offers some of the best value for money in the entire computer industry.

When the Mac mini first launched, Steve Jobs described it as a “stripped-down Mac that is more affordable.” At the time, the Mac mini was priced at $499, a price that seemed almost too good to be true for a machine running macOS. Adjusted for inflation, $499 in 2005 would be around $825 today, which makes the Mac mini’s current price of $599 a great deal by comparison. Despite the passage of two decades, the Mac mini remains incredibly affordable, especially considering its performance and capabilities.

For many people, especially those who don’t need to work on the go, the Mac mini is likely the best Mac available right now. It offers access to the rich ecosystem of macOS apps and a growing catalog of AAA Mac games, providing everything most people need for their day-to-day computing tasks. Whether for work, play, or anything in between, the Mac mini is versatile and capable of handling most users’ needs.

As someone who has been a fan of the Mac mini for years, I can attest to its value. My M1 Mac mini provides all the power I need without taking up much desk space, and it has become an indispensable part of my setup. While I once thought my small-form-factor Windows PC was the pinnacle of compact design, the M4 Mac mini has easily surpassed it. The new model’s diminutive size and immense power are a testament to how far the Mac mini has come in the past two decades.

One of the standout features of the Mac mini is its flexibility in terms of peripherals. Unlike Apple’s other products, such as the MacBook Pro, which come with built-in keyboards and mice, the Mac mini allows users to bring their own display, keyboard, and mouse. As Steve Jobs famously said, the Mac mini is “BYODKM” — bring your own display, keyboard, and mouse. This open approach allows users to customize their setup with their preferred peripherals, whether they’re using a mechanical keyboard, a gaming mouse, or a large, high-resolution display. This level of customization is one of the Mac mini’s greatest strengths, as it lets users build a setup tailored to their specific needs and preferences.

A few months ago, I was contemplating giving up my Mac mini. Not because it wasn’t serving me well, but because my MacBook Pro was handling everything I needed, and I found myself reaching for it more often. However, when the M4 Mac mini was released, it completely changed my perspective. The combination of its ultra-compact design, powerful performance, and sleek aesthetics reminded me of what I loved about the Mac mini in the first place. It made me reconsider ditching my Windows PC and reaffirmed my belief that the Mac mini is a truly great product.

The Mac mini has had a long and successful history, with each new iteration refining its design and enhancing its performance. The original model, which may seem bulky by today’s standards, was revolutionary in its time for its size and capabilities. Successive models only improved on this, reducing the overall size and incorporating more powerful hardware. While it may not have always been the most powerful Mac in Apple’s lineup, it has consistently offered great value for the price.

The introduction of Apple’s custom silicon chips in 2020, particularly the M1 chip, marked a turning point for the Mac mini. The M1 chip brought significant performance improvements, and the launch of the M4 chips in 2024 has only further cemented the Mac mini’s status as a powerhouse in a small package. No longer just a modest machine, the Mac mini now combines great power with its small form factor, proving that “mini” can indeed mean “mighty.”

Today’s Mac mini is arguably in the best shape it has ever been. With its impressive performance, attractive design, and affordability, it’s a top contender for anyone looking for a capable and compact desktop computer. Looking back at the past 20 years of the Mac mini, it’s clear that the device has come a long way. As Apple continues to refine and improve upon its design, it will be exciting to see where the Mac mini goes in the next 20 years. With its current trajectory, the Mac mini is poised to remain a dominant force in the desktop computer market for many years to come.
