Fans of The Last of Us can mark their calendars—season 2 will premiere this spring on HBO and stream on Max. Announced during Sony’s press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show, Neil Druckmann, co-creator, writer, and executive producer, confirmed that the much-anticipated second season will debut in April 2025. The new season will consist of seven episodes.

The announcement was accompanied by a brief teaser that introduces Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, a pivotal new character in season 2. Abby, a controversial figure from the game, is expected to stir strong reactions among fans due to her polarizing actions. In the teaser, she ominously states, “It doesn’t matter if you have a code like me. There are just some things everyone agrees are just wrong,” setting the tone for what’s to come.

Returning and New Cast Members
The second season will see the return of Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, the two central characters whose bond has captivated audiences. Gabriel Luna will reprise his role as Joel’s brother, Tommy, while Rutina Wesley returns as Tommy’s wife, Maria, who is also co-leader of the Jackson community.

New cast members joining the ensemble include Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Emmy-winning actress Catherine O’Hara is also set to guest star in the season.

Season 2 Storyline
Set five years after the events of the first season, The Last of Us season 2 will explore Joel and Ellie’s evolving relationship, as they navigate a world even more perilous and unpredictable than before. Tensions will rise, and the consequences of their actions will weigh heavily on both characters.

The Last of Us was adapted from the highly acclaimed video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog for PlayStation. The first season debuted in January 2023 to widespread critical acclaim and record-breaking viewership. It received 24 Emmy nominations, winning eight in total.
